This time the ambition is to bring communities of engineers, creatives, scientists, teachers and other curious people together. A TEDx Salon is an event that keeps a TEDx community engaged between the main TEDx events. At this Salon event there will be 6 speakers and a workshop with interaction between all participants after the TEDx talks. Something a lot of you have asked for. We’re exited to interact more with you!

Speakers

Carl Bärstad, Hobby scientist & founder of SparklingScience.com

Curiosity-fueled learning and creative thinking are becoming the most important traits to thrive in the 21st century. Yet we have a school system that numbs curiosity and kills creativity. Carl tells us how he reclaimed his own curiosity by “hacking himself” and how he is now using this insight to make technology more fun, engaging and accessible in the 21st century “classroom” through his projects Hackerspace in a box and Kids Hack Day.

Twitter handle: @carlbarstad

Morten Bülow, Architect MAA

How do you turn ideas into reality? The development and increased accessibility of digital fabrication tools has made the path from idea to physical reality much shorter.

Through a review of the fabHouse project Morten Bülow tells the story about the realization of Denmark’s first Fab Lab. A story about how far you can get with dedicated people, an innovative mindset and a lot of effort.

Morten Bülow is a Danish architect specialized in digital design and fabrication. He is the founding architect of Kombo Building Systems.

Jens Dyvik, independent designer, researcher and film maker.

Jens Dyvik is a designer specialized in global collaboration and local manufacturing. He works with emotional connections between people and products, and aims to create services and products that help make those connections meaningful.

In April 2013 he concluded a two-year research world tour, where he worked at open collaborative workspaces in all corners of the world. Jens dreams to make a living from an open and sharing design approach. His research into open design and personal manufacturing is aiming to realize this dream. He is currently establishing a Fab Lab in Oslo, which he will run next to his designstudio.

Jakob Eg Larsen, Ph.D Associate Professor, DTU

Over the last couple of years self-tracking has gained increased interest with the availability of smartphones and low-cost wearable sensors. The increasing quantities of data that we can capture about human behavior and interactions are key to future improvements in health and well-being.
Jakob Eg Larsen, Ph.D, is an Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark, where he is working in the Cognitive Systems Section. His research interests include human-computer interaction, mobile and wearable computing and sensing, and personal informatics.

Twitter handle: @jakobeglarsen

Peter Bøggild, Lektor at DTU Nanotech

Graphite, which we all know as a soft, black and dull material, is made up of independent, atomically thin sheets of graphene. Since graphene was first “discovered” a decade ago, we have learned that this material has extreme and peculiar properties with a staggering potential for new technologies. Researchers today are gearing up for this ultimate exploration of ‘flatland’, but how do we deal with a material that defies all conventions of how a material behaves? In his talk Peter will argue why this is such a big challenge, and why we absolutely have to try to overcome it.

Nikolaj “Dzl” Møbius, Technology Guru, RUC

N7331227 is a retired industrial robot brought back to life by artists. Reverse engineered and given a new job in his old age, the robot reveals his personality. He shows us that industrial robots, previously thought to ask no questions and do their job precisely, and efficiently, actually have a unique and diverse personality hiding inside, but it requires some love and tinkering to find.

Nikolaj “Dzl” Møbius is an engineer, inventor and artist, currently working as a Technology Guru at Roskilde University. He has combined his expertise on many projects involving radio, electronics, high voltage, sound, and of course, robots.

TEDxCopenhagen are organizing a Salon Event Focusing on Technology on May 17th at The Danish Society of Engineers (IDA).

Press Release April 27th 2013
Technology needs to be placed much higher on the agenda, possibly as the single most important driving force of the future. This is the common aspiration of the Danish TEDx-organization and The Danish Society of Engineers, IDA.

That is why the TEDx-grassroots in Denmark – TEDxCopenhagen – are collaborating with The Danish Society of Engineers at their so-called salon event about technology on May 17th in Ingeniørhuset in Copenhagen 1 pm – 5 pm.

”We need to talk far more about technology and about the possibilities that technology creates, to solve the global challenges of the future”, says Frida Frost, chairwoman of IDA, on The Danish Society of Engineers’ approach to the technology salon.

The title of the event is ”Breaking Currents” – an expression that can reflect both hydrologic flow and electrical current, as well as currents that break.

The title is therefore fully aligned with the ambition that is to present new talents and ideas that have not been seen or heard before. The salon comprises a total of five talks, which are produced professionally and will be posted online on TEDx’s global Youtube-channel, where the entire planet will be able to watch the Danish ideas.

Also in line with the TEDx-concept, a lot of effort is made to find the brightest and most interesting speakers up until deadline. Therefore, the guests – contrary to attending traditional events – will not receive the full program until a few days before the event on May 17th.

”We see the collaboration with IDA as a unique opportunity to bring together communities of engineers, creatives, scientists, teachers and other curious people around the technological agenda and ideas that are worth spreading”, says Lærke Ullerup from TEDxCopenhagen.

Be ready to sign up on April 30th

The total of 240 seats and tickets for the event are released on April 30th – first come first served! Tickets are free but with a ‘no show’ fee on 300 kr. Tickets for these events are usually sold out in no time, so be right as rain and quick on your keyboard.

Ticket sales open on April 30th at 8.30 AM on IDA´s and TEDxCopenhagens´ websites.

On Monday I was interviewed for a documentary about TEDx. The director asked me about my favourite TED talk. I told her about Sugata Mitra and she smiled in a weird way. Now I understand why.

Sugatra Mitra was just awarded the TED Prize for his project School in the Cloud. His talk from yesterday in Longbeach is online now.

In 2010 I attended TEDGlobal in Oxford. Sugata Mitra went on stage to talk about self-organised learning environments (SOLE), computers installed in ‘holes in walls’ in rural areas in India and how learning happens if you walk away and let it happen. His talk made a very strong impression on me and I remember sitting in the theatre with tears in my eyes and goosebumps. What he talked about was so inspiring and connected to all the stuff I believe in about systems thinking, complexity, learning, autopoeisis, networks and learning. Watch the 2010 talk here:

Yesterday he told more stories about his research and how encouragement, internet, collaboration and the SOLEs are key to leveraging education in new ways.

The prize is an invitation to participate in scaling an education system where learning can happen. Figure out how you can take part in the project here: http://www.ted.com/pages/prizewinner_sugata_mitra.

Let me know if you have an idea for something we could do in Denmark or in the TEDxCopenhagen community to support his project.

A deeply sincere ‘THANK YOU’ goes out to the more than 100 volunteers that made the TEDxCopenhagen conference 2012 such a great success. Had it not been for the team of co-organizers, volunteers and helpful souls carrying the whole thing out, TEDxCopenhagen 2012 would not have been this wonderful and insightful experience.

Meet some of the people that made the event turn out so well and hear what they think of the conference and why TEDxCopenhagen is worth all the hard work.

Speaker Joseph Hamoud gave a strong talk at TEDxCopenhagen 2012 that had the participants in tears and ended with a standing ovation. Here he reflects upon the experience…

I was standing waiting for my turn to speak when I heard Mikael Colville-Andersen, the presenter of TEDxCopenhagen say my name. I realized I hadn’t heard anything he’d said before nor do I remember anything after that. At that point I had rewritten my speech at least 20 times, I couldn’t really just recite my life or put it into words , funny enough I had an old familiar feeling just before I got on stage – I was angry!

It was like a subconscious reaction to stress and pressure. I wasn’t nervous… I was angry!
I had drafted out some notes just before I went on stage , but when I tried to remember them and couldn’t , I got even more upset and I decided for the most part of it to improvise what I was about to say. So I shoved the papers into my pocket and went on.

At the back of my mind I was thinking of the irony of a dictatorship, what Orewell calls “Doublethink” and “Doublespeak”. What made me angry was the irony of life. The irony of a regime calling its own citizens traitors and terrorists and killing them mercilessly with weapons they themselves bought, by an army who swore to protect them.

When I was up on stage I thought of a joke I once heard in a movie: A man goes to doctor. Says he’s depressed, life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, “Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town. Go see him. That should pick you up.” Man bursts into tears.”But doctor” He says, “I am Pagliacci.”
Good joke. Everybody laughs. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

I was on stage… lights hit me like pointblank shot in the face and suddenly I was calm. At this point all that was going on in my head was, “why am I here?” – “Why everyone else is here?” Because up until that point I wasn’t sure if we were there just to attend this cultural event and cross it out of some to-do list, talk it over with a bunch of friends at dinner over a $400 bottle of wine, or if we were there to help change the world and be part of that morally courageous course that had been set in motion.

Tell you the truth I don’t remember most of my speech. I remember what was going on in my head, but not my speech. I remember the stories I told, because they are engraved in my memory forever; a detail more or a detail less depends on how many cups of coffee I had had and how many hours I had slept. How much I was willing to abandon my usual sarcastic demeanor and head to places in my mind that I usually pass by without looking, like a horrible accident on a highway.

Why did I decide to do a TEDx talk to call for helping the refugees? And why did we start a campaign afterwards to raise funds for them? And why do I think that everyone should be involved in this? Because I want to have faith and hope that people still care. That we are not alone, separate and pathetic. I want to believe that this life is not some sick cold joke and the punch line is our misery.

I have high hopes for our endeavors because of the honor that was bestowed upon me by the amazing reaction of the crowds and then the awesome response to my desire to initiate an action by Ole Kassow who started a fund-raising campaign online and now helping me along with several others – even parliament members – to organize a public rally where we advertise our cause.

We’re also considering starting an NGO that helps war victims and refugees all over the world.

I’m really looking forward to help change the world a bit with these awesome individuals.

Painting a picture one body at a time.
